Campmaster Program

What is the Campmaster Program?

The Campmaster Program is designed to bring adult volunteers and their families into camp on the weekends to allow the Camp Ranger a chance to get away. Primary responsibility of Campmasters is to provide camp security, check units in and out, and be available for emergencies.

What is a Campmaster?

A Campmaster is a registered adult volunteer from within the Bay Lakes Council who visits camp and provides short-term program, operations and maintenance.

What are the Goals of the Campmaster Program?

To develop a core group of individuals who are available to make sure there is never a pause in the operation of Bear Paw Scout Camp. Example: The Camp Ranger must leave camp due to a family emergency, a Campmaster can step in and ensure the camp is available to Scout units.

It will also allow Scouters & their families an opportunity to experience camp without the responsibility of their Pack or Troop. Camp can be a different and most enjoyable place when the Unit responsibility is not there.

What Will the Campmaster be Responsible for?

The program is designed first and foremost as a backup to the Camp Ranger. Responsibilities may or may not include the following:

Can Your Family Come to Camp?

But of course...we have set up one half of the married staff quarters, located upstairs in Saffran Lodge, as the Campmaster Headquarters. Apartment "A" in Saffran Lodge has two bedrooms, 2 beds each, a full bath, living room and complete kitchen. There is a TV, VCR, radio, alarm clocks, toaster, microwave and coffee maker. What you will need to bring is your personal hygiene items, personal bedding and your food, all else is provided.

The Scouting Family

The one requirement that will be placed on you and your family is that you will be representing the Bay Lakes Council and in fact an unpaid professional. It is expected that you and your family will represent Scouting Family ideals, following the Scout Oath and the Scout Law.

What are the Training Requirements?

All Campmasters will be required to attend specific training. A training outline with all of the requirements is available from the program coordinator. Some of the requirements include:

Training Sessions

We hold two, day long training sessions each year. Each Campmaster will be required to attend these training sessions to update training certifications, receive new information about Camp and/or Camp procedures, update records, welcome new members, etc.. Failure to keep training requirements up will require the removal of a Campmasters certification.

Training sessions will be scheduled in the fall & spring, on a Saturday acceptable to the majority of Campmasters.

How do I Join the Campmaster Corp?

Contact the program coordinator if you would like to help out, complete an application and your name will be submitted to the Bay Lakes Council for final approval. You can start by sending an email to the Campmaster Coordinator

Will I be Required to do Camp Maintenance?

Yes, but it will be nothing beyond your comfort level and at most will be of the emergency type. You will not be expected to come to camp and "work your butt off". If it is a serious nature, you will expected to know "who" to call more so than "how" to fix it.

As a Campmaster at Bear Paw, you will receive a copy of our Campmaster's Guide, which contains all the camp specifics, so you will not be required to remember massive quantities of information .
